Special features in the Canton of Aargau

In Aargau, there are some tax specifics you should be aware of:

  • No separate property tax: As in the canton of Zurich, there is no separate property tax in Aargau. Real estate is taxed exclusively as part of wealth tax, which simplifies the tax return.
  • Increase in child and care deductions: As of January 1, 2023, Aargau has slightly increased deductions for children (depending on age and education status), support deductions for individuals unable to work, and care deductions. This already provides tax relief for families and caregivers.
  • Adjustment of flat-rate deductions for insurance premiums and savings capital interest: Since 2022, flat-rate deductions have been increased – for example, from CHF 4,000 to CHF 6,000 for married persons. This reduces the taxable base and provides direct relief.
  • Attractive corporate tax rate: The canton of Aargau is introducing a uniform corporate tax rate of 15.1% (expected from 2024). Even before that, the two-tier tariff was gradually reduced, providing noticeable relief for companies.
  • Wide range of municipal tax rates: The effective tax burden in Aargau varies significantly by municipality. While some municipalities have tax rates around 72%, others exceed 120%. These differences offer strategic advantages when choosing a place of residence.
